Here on my 3rd posting for Technical Support Services (Kentz S.A.) at our client's Saudi Elastomers Project, my responsibility is for the installation and construction of the plant instrumentation process control systems and devices electrical loops and pneumatic hook ups.
Honeywell DCS, Triconex ESD for control, quad conveyor system with robots finish and pack the rubber blocks and pellets fed from the process as the basic set up.
With the small team here we are responsible for supervising and training the inexperienced contractors in the installation of the cabling and terminations of the instruments for the plant process control loops and hook up tubing work. As Performing Authorities and Issuers for the Permit to Work system, this is proving to be most challenging. Working closely with QAQC and PMT our greatest challenge lies with educating the contractors Supervisors in proper installation methods and overcoming their inexperience in professional construction procedures to deliver a quality installation for the client.

My Oil & Gas role (chemical and petrochemical hydrocarbon process refineries) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Eastern Province is for a Multi-international Engineering firm with bases on all continents specialising in Oil & Gas EPCM and large scale construction.
Our role here is providing interface and technical support services to the Saudi contractors involved in the Electrical & Instrumentation construction on the 26 plants being built on this $20 Bn project.
Working for the DOW / Saudi Aramco partnership we join project management and engineers of EPCM companies such as KBR, Jacobs, Foster Wheeler, Técnicas Reunidas, Linde and Fluor. Our special services include providing solutions for poor production, pushing production, directing the contractors safely and training the multinational teams in achieving western installation standards and techniques.

This role included responsibilities as Superintendent, Performing Authority (Permit to Work), witness and co-ordinator of the Instrumentation pre-commissioning on behalf of Fluor EPC & M Services UK. My contractual duty required certification of plant control loops for the client (Conoco Philips) and supervisory management of the instrumentation labour.
Plant process was converting H2S (Sour Gas) to Sulphuric acid via the Emerson Delta V (vers12) DCS with AMS.
Pre-Commissioning responsibilities.
~ Certification of 4 - 20mA and digital Foundation Fieldbus hot and cold loops for Rosemount flow, temperature, level and pressure transmitters.
~ Verification and correct operation of Flowserve and Fisher valves, positioners and signals. ~ Witnessing pre-commissioning of analysers for Continuous Emissions Monitoring, H2O and NOX Systems with ABB engineers.
~ Logic and loop verification for Triconex ESD (chassis and software) to switchgear and control devices.
~ Loop checking Drager, Honeywell (Optima units) and Detronics fire and gas sensors via
F & G 3 voting systems (Simplex, Duplex and Triplex) using 1oo1, 1oo2, 2oo2, 2oo3 & 2oon.

This contract required me to work with the Fluor commissioning engineers on site before my promotion to the team itself at the North Terminal.
Having also been promoted whilst in this role to relief Lead instrumentation pre-commissioning technician, my daily duties for SSE comprised of documentation, organisation of Risk Assessment and Method Statements. As Performing Authority my responsibility was for, Work Permit applications, Health & Safety of commissioning technicians, conducting Tool Box Talks to carry out the pre-commissioning procedures. Hands on roles involved verifying Emerson DCS interface, instrument parameters and engineering indices with Delta V technicians. Likewise engineering checks such as calibration and functional commissioning of the, instruments, actuators, positioners and valves were also my remit.

Offshore Instrumentation Technician Rig work on Alpha Cormorant owned by TAQA Bratani.
My responsibilities required me to carry out calibrations, maintenance, repairs and Shut Down preparation work as set out by daily work packs provided by Lead E & I Engineer. Typically these were Wormauld Fire & Gas (H2S, Methane and Oxygen) monitoring systems including Crowcon personal sensing units and "Dalek" protection devices. Additionally this also included for Shut down over ride, rig drilling, and pumping and accommodation Instrumentation System services monitored via the Honeywell DCS.

Reporting to the Commissioning Manager, I undertook tests of the rig’s electrical power systems, circuits, plant and protective equipment and recorded the results with my partner. These required the utilisation of specialised test equipment (including Ductor and Megger SCITS meters) and visual inspections, followed by the recording of results on report sheets and the PIMS CMS computer system.
Key Achievements:
• Quickly understanding the design of the master MV / LV switchboard and Grouped Generation/Distributed Transfer.
• Meeting the huge expectations of the highly experienced oil and gas team from SBM and Talisman, while adding to my own stock of industry knowledge by closely observing my colleagues.
• Capitalising on my previous work in Norway and Norwegian accreditations to build a relationship with the safety permit office with my partner, enabling us to speed up the issuing of certificates for completed tests.
• Completing up to twice as many tests with my partner for a given number of man hours.
• Utilising my broad knowledge of high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) electrical installations to safely examine the rig’s system for faults likely to cause danger in the explosive environments.
